Journalist Carmel Rickard has lived in the tiny town of Smithfield in the Free State for 13 years where she runs a B&B. Last year a nervous performer heading to Grahamstown to put on a play at the National Arts Festival did a run through in Carmel’s house. The experience has been turned into a “preview” festival that takes advantage of Smithfield’s location to catch performers as they travel cross country to do the NAF. The result is that Smithfield, and its nearby towns now have a lively annual arts offering which is reaching into schools, touching people who’ve never experienced theatre and empowering teachers.
